Bada Osha (Odia: ବଡ଼ ଓଷା) is one of the most important festivals in Odisha, where people observe a strict fast and worship Lord Shiva for his blessings. Bada Osha falls on the fourteenth day of the bright fortnight of Kartika month, which is usually in November. This year, Bada Osha is on 25th November 2023.
Bada Osha is also known as Dhabaleswar Osha, as it is the main festival at the Dhabaleswar temple, located on an island in the river Mahanadi near Cuttack. The temple is dedicated to Lord Mahadeva, another name for Shiva, and attracts lakhs of devotees every year.
The rituals of Bada Osha start in the middle of Kartika month, the day after Diwali. Both men and women observe the fast, which is rare in other festivals. The fast is broken only after offering prayers and offerings to Lord Shiva at the temple or at home. The offerings include fruits, flowers, milk, and a special sweet called Gaja Pitha, which is pure white in color and shaped like an elephant’s trunk along with Tarana.
