Maa Bhadrakali appears as RAJARAJESWARI for the devotees in the 3rd day of Sapta Matruka Mahajagnya during Kali-Puja, mounting a lion and elephant and looks sublime in her queenly pink attire. Maa dazzles in all gold and silver ornaments and truly looks like a Rajarajeswari. Maa holds the Conch (represents the first sound OM), Discus (represent the chakra or the mind), Lotus (represents the fertility and all creation) and a Mace (represents mental and physical strength) in her four hands giving a strong message that SHE is the source of all strength and creation.

It is believed the glory remains intact with the darshan this day.

The second-day besha of Maa Bhadrakali is Mahakali. On this day Maa Bhadrakali Appears in red Patta attire with black face. With open hair and bloody tongue, Maa holds a Khdga and a Trisula in her hand and looks quite wild by wearing a long garland of skulls. It is believed that Maa Bhadrakali is Baishnavi and grace the earth by holding Bala Gopal in her lap on this day.

Thus, in one hand she appears to be a lovable and gracious mother to the whole living and on the other, she destroys all evils and bad habits and establishes truth and harmony.

During seven days of Kali Puja, Maa Bhadra Kali appears in different attires in different days for her devotees and BEDAMAATA is the first among those. As per the name (Bedamata means the mother of all Vedas), Maa is being worshipped as the source of all knowledge and its believed that Maa blessed his devotees with a whole lot of knowledge. In this day maa appears in all yellow. Her face appearing as yellow with yellow clothes and yellow ornaments I.e. gold. Maa comes to the earth mounting her swan and used to sit on a lotus flower.she appears in four arms with Mali(kind of garland) in right hand and Sankha (conch shell) in left. It is also believed that, in Deepawali, like the light illuminates the darkness, Maa illuminates all ignorance and fills with the light of wisdom.

Bhadrakali Temple is located on the outskirts of the revenue village Aharapada which is at a distance of 8 km away from Bhadrak town in the south-west direction. The popular belief is that the name of the Town has been derived from the name of the deity.

The statue of Goddess is of black granite and is seated in lotus posture on a lion. The temple remains open for visitors and devotees every day from 6.30 am to 1 pm and again from 3 pm to 9.30 pm.As per the nomenclature of the goddess, one tends to believe that it is the goddess Kali who is being worshipped in this Bhadrakali Pitha. However, since the deity is seated on a lion, one school of thought has opined that the goddess can be no other than the goddess Durga. According to legends originally Bhadrakali was worshipped inside a cave in the Meghasana hill of Mayurbhanj district by a sage named Tapasa Rushi. After the death of the sage, one of his pupil namely Bhadranatha brought the goddess to Bhunyamahalla of Bhadrak. To protect the deity from Kalapahad, she was again transferred to present place by the Dikshit. Mostly during Vijaya Dashami and Deepavali crowds gather for seeking blessings of a benevolent mother.

A seven day Maha Jagnya is celebrated every year stated from Kali Puja. In these seven days, seven Beshas of Maa Bhadrakali performed known as Saptamatruka Besha.

Saptamatruka Beshas are:

  1. Bedamata Besha
  2. Mahakali Besha
  3. Rajarajeswari Besha
  4. Singhabahini Besha
  5. Jagadhatri Besha
  6. Maha Saraswati Besha
  7. Maha Laxmi Besha
