Sunki Ghati, Koraput

Sunki, village in the Koraput district of the Indian state of Odisha. It is located at the border between Odisha's Koraput district and Vijayanagaram district, Andhra Pradesh and on the National Highway 43. The Ghati is known as "Sunki Ghati".

Two of our friends, Prabir kumar Sahoo and Sudipta Kumar Sahoo had shared some photos form Sunki Ghati.

There are some roads that are more than just a way to reach a destination. They become part of the journey itself. Sunki Ghati in southern Odisha is one such road—a winding mountain route where lush green hills, misty valleys and dramatic monsoon skies create an unforgettable landscape.

Located in Koraput district of Odisha, Sunki lies close to the Odisha–Andhra Pradesh border. The village is situated along the historic highway corridor connecting Koraput with Andhra Pradesh, and the mountainous stretch around it is popularly known as Sunki Ghati.

A Journey Through the Eastern Ghats

As the road climbs through the hills, the landscape changes dramatically. The relatively open surroundings give way to dense vegetation, deep valleys and mountain slopes covered in different shades of green.

During the monsoon, Sunki Ghati takes on a completely different character. Clouds settle over the hills, mist drifts through the valleys and rainwater gives the roadside vegetation a fresh, vibrant appearance.

For a photographer, these changing conditions make the journey particularly fascinating. One moment the distant hills may be clearly visible; a few minutes later, they can disappear completely behind a curtain of mist.

Where Odisha Meets Andhra Pradesh

Sunki is located near the border of Koraput district in Odisha and the neighbouring region of Andhra Pradesh. This makes the area an important passage between the two states.

The highway through Sunki has long been an important transport route through southern Odisha. The Odisha Works Department lists the Koraput–Sunki section among the state's National Highway routes.

Today, the road is used by buses, trucks, cars and travellers moving between Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. But beyond its importance as a transport corridor, the mountain landscape makes the route memorable for anyone who enjoys a good road journey.

The Beauty of a Monsoon Drive

If there is one season when Sunki Ghati truly comes alive, it is the monsoon.

Rain clouds gather around the mountains, small waterfalls and streams appear along the slopes, and the forests become intensely green. The combination of wet roads, cool mountain air and drifting clouds creates an atmosphere that feels almost cinematic.

The best photographs often come when the weather is slightly unpredictable. A break in the clouds may reveal a distant mountain ridge, while mist continues to cover the valleys below.

It is this constantly changing landscape that makes travelling through Koraput so rewarding.

A Photographer's Perspective

Standing beside a quiet road in Sunki Ghati, it is easy to forget that the highway is a busy transport route.

The winding road draws the eye towards the mountains, while the stone roadside barrier creates a natural leading line into the landscape. Beyond it, layers of hills fade gradually into the mist.

There is very little that needs to be added to such a frame. The road, the clouds, the greenery and the mountains tell the story themselves.

Beyond the Road

Koraput is one of Odisha's most scenic highland regions, with rolling plateaus, forested hills and deep valleys forming much of its landscape. The district lies within the Eastern Ghats and includes some of the state's most dramatic mountain scenery.

Sunki is therefore not simply a place to pass through. For travellers exploring southern Odisha, the Ghati can become part of a larger journey through Koraput's mountains and cultural landscape.

A Road Worth Remembering

Some destinations are remembered because of what you do there. Others are remembered because of the journey it took to reach them.

Sunki Ghati belongs to the second kind. The winding highway, mist-covered mountains and lush green valleys create a landscape that stays with you long after the journey is over.

And when the clouds descend over the hills and the road disappears around the next bend, you realise that sometimes the road itself is the destination.
